A Night at the Auction

We are so excited about our Service Auction Enrichment Night this coming Thursday! The point of the auction is for us to get to know one another better and grow in love and unity by serving. Sappy? Maybe. But so much fun and completely worth it!

So how will you bid on services if there's no money involved? On the night of the auction you will be given a questionnaire. It will have questions that you can mark off to earn points for the evening's activity. Some of the questions could be if you...

-Had Family Home Evening this week
-20 minutes of daily exercise
-Obeying the speed limit
-Read your scriptures this week
-Fed the missionaries in the past month
-Did something nice for someone

There will be many ways to earn points. These are just a few ideas. Answering the questionnaire and keeping track of your points will be done on the honor system.

We have some great items up for auction. Thank you to all of you who are donating your time and effort to and making this a great success. Some of the items are (but not limited to):

-Dinners
-Rides to the temple
-Babysitting
-FHE Lesson and Conference Bingo activity
-Handmade items, such as cards, tote bags, apron, and scarf
-Desserts, desserts, desserts!
-Being taken to lunch
-Homemade bread, rolls, and jams
-Sewing and voice lessons
-Help with housework and home organization
-Game and movie nights

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday! Refreshments will be served, and a nursery will be provided by the men.

September's Visiting Teaching Message

Understand and Live the Gospel of Christ
Ensign, September 2009

Teach these scriptures and quotations or, if needed, another principle that will bless the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you visit to share what they have felt and learned.

How Can I Better Understand and Live the Gospel?

Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin (1917–2008) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "Faithful members of the Church should be like oak trees and should extend deep roots into the fertile soil of the fundamental principles of the gospel. We should understand and live by the simple, basic truths and not complicate them. Our foundations should be solid and deep-rooted so we can withstand the winds of temptation, false doctrine, adversity, and the onslaught of the adversary without being swayed or uprooted. . . .

"Spiritual nourishment is just as important as a balanced diet to keep us strong and healthy. We nourish ourselves spiritually by partaking of the sacrament weekly, reading the scriptures daily, praying daily in personal and family prayer, and performing temple work regularly. Our spiritual strengths are like batteries; they need to be charged and frequently recharged" ("Deep Roots," Ensign, Nov. 1994, 75).

Barbara Thompson, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency: "Sisters, now more than ever, we need women to step up and be strong. We need women who declare the truth with strength, faith, and boldness. We need women to set an example of righteousness. We need women to be 'anxiously engaged in a good cause.' We need to live so that our lives bear witness that we love our Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ and that we will do what They have asked us to do" ("Now Let Us Rejoice," Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2008, 116).

2 Nephi 31:12: "Follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do."

How Does Understanding and Living the Gospel Bless Lives?

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency: "As we strive to understand, internalize, and live correct gospel principles, we will become more spiritually self-reliant. . . . I testify as an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ that He lives, that the gospel is true, and that it offers the answers to all personal and collective challenges the children of God have on this earth today" ("Christlike Attributes—the Wind beneath Our Wings," Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2005, 100, 101).

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "The plan of happiness is available to all of his children. If the world would embrace and live it, peace, joy, and plenty would abound on the earth. Much of the suffering we know today would be eliminated if people throughout the world would understand and live the gospel" ("Answers to Life's Questions," Ensign, May 1995, 23).

Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "We must live the gospel in such a way that we will have the Spirit to ever be with us. If we live worthily, the Spirit will always be with us. We can then teach by the Spirit. . . . The reason we pray, study the scriptures, have good friends, and live the gospel through obedience to the commandments is so that when—not if, but when--the trials come, we are ready" ("Teaching by Faith," Liahona, Sept. 2003, 10, 14–15; Ensign, Sept. 2003, 20, 24–25).

Don't forget to do your visiting teaching!

Activities for 9/14-9/17

Good evening, ladies! Here's a recap of the enrichment activities going on this week. As a reminder, these activities are designed to meet the needs and desires of the sisters, but sisters are not expected to attend them all.

Monday, 9/14 - Yoga class in the gym at the church. Dress comfortably, and if you do not have a yoga mat plan on wearing sneakers or other shoes that will give you traction on the carpet. Child care will be available at the church for a nominal fee. The cost per week is $2 for the first child, $3 for 2 children to be paid when you come.

Tuesday, 9/15 - Women's Day Out at the Temple. To carpool, meet at the church at 9:15. Cars will be leaving at 9:30 sharp. Or, you can meet at the temple for the 10:20 session. Lunch following at Jason's Deli on 33rd Street between Boulevard and Broadway. You do not have to attend the temple to meet for lunch.

Wednesday 9/16 - Women's Choir at the church in the Relief Society room from 10-11am. We are practicing to meet sing at the quarterly Enrichment Night on September 24th and have just 2 practices left!

Thursday 9/17 - Playgroup, hosted by Stephanie Crandall at Hafer Park from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Meet at the first playground on your right.

Thursday, 9/17 - Frugal And Fabulous. We will be meeting in the Young Women's Room at the church from 7-8pm. Amy Johnson will be presenting with a focus on Frugal Food: grocery shopping, menu planning and budgeting, trimming the excess from our grocery bill, food storage, and more!
