Sister Ruth Hopkins Passed Away

We are so sad to let you know of the passing of our sweet sister, Ruth Hopkins. She died on Sunday morning from complications arising from pneumonia.

Her funeral will be held in Atoka, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Brown Mortuary. Her sister, Becky and the rest of the family are leaving early in the morning to prepare for the funeral.

As you may know, Ruth leaves behind a sweet daughter, Carly, who is 9 and an older son & daughter-in-law. As we get more information, we will let you know if there is anything that you might do to help. Please keep them in your prayers.

Strengthening Families and Homes

Study this material, and as appropriate, discuss it with the sisters you visit. Use the questions to help you strengthen your sisters and to make Relief Society an active part of your own life.

Strengthening at Every Opportunity

"Each of us is in a different family situation. Some families have a mother and father with children at home. Some couples no longer have children at home. Many members of the Church are single, and some are single parents. Others are widows or widowers living alone.

"No matter what our family looks like, each of us can work to strengthen our own families or help in strengthening others.

"[Once] I stayed in the home of my niece and her family. That evening before the children went to bed, we had a short family home evening and a scripture story. Their father told about the family of Lehi and how he taught his children that they must hold fast to the iron rod, which is the word of God. Holding fast to the iron rod would keep them safe and lead them to joy and happiness. If they should let go of the iron rod, there was danger of drowning in the river of dirty water.

"To demonstrate this to the children, their mother became the 'iron rod' that they must cling to, and their father played the role of the devil, trying to pull the children away from safety and happiness. The children loved the story and learned how important it is to hold fast to the iron rod. After the scripture story it was time for family prayer. . . .

"Scriptures, family home evening, and family prayer will strengthen families. We need to take every opportunity to strengthen families and support one another to stay on the right path."1

From Our History
From the beginning Relief Society has had a charge to strengthen families and homes. The Prophet Joseph taught sisters at an early Relief Society meeting, "When you go home, never give a cross or unkind word to your husbands, but let kindness, charity and love crown your works henceforward."2

In 1914 President Joseph F. Smith told Relief Society sisters, "Wherever there is ignorance or at least a lack of understanding in regard to the family, . . . there this organization exists or is near at hand, and by the natural endowments and inspiration that belongs to the organization they are prepared and ready to impart instruction with reference to those important duties."3

Renewing Covenants through the Sacrament

Teach these scriptures and quotations or, if needed, another principle that will bless the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you visit to share what they have felt and learned.

Jesus Christ Instituted the Sacrament

“Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to his Apostles, saying, ‘Take, eat’ (Matt. 26:26). ‘This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me’ (Luke 22:19). In a similar manner he took the cup of wine, traditionally diluted with water, said a blessing of thanks for it, and passed it to those gathered about him, saying: ‘This cup is the new testament in my blood,’ ‘which is shed … for the remission of sins.’ ‘This do in remembrance of me.’ …

We Renew Our Baptismal Covenants through the Sacrament

“When we are baptized, we take upon ourselves the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Taking upon us His name is one of the most significant experiences we have in life …

“Each week in sacrament meeting we promise to remember the atoning sacrifice of our Savior as we renew our baptismal covenant. We promise to do as the Savior did—to be obedient to the Father and always keep His commandments. The blessing we receive in return is to always have His Spirit to be with us.”2

This event is geared for the younger children and their parents. Older kids are invited, but they need to "play" nicely!

Rules:

Parents must stay with their children. No dropoffs please.
Parents are responsible for their OWN children. Do not assume that the older kids in the pool will watch your kids.
Everyone needs to vigilant about their childrens behavior. The pool is crowded somedays.
You are responsible for their actions. Like any pool, roughhousing and running isn't going to be allowed.
You are in charge of your kids! The Nuttalls are not responsible for any injuries that may occur.
Please bring snacks to share.

We don't have a complete summer schedule yet, but will let you know soon! Thank you so much Nuttall family for sharing your wonderful swimming pool!

We are going to try to set some “almost always” days for our Relief Society Activities.

So, you can plan that if we are having an organized RS activity, it will be held (almost always) on the first Thursday of the month. The third Tuesday, 10:20am session, will be the day for our sister’s temple trip. We will not continue with Relief Society evening temple trips. Instead, we are encouraging all who can to attend our ward temple nights.

At this Easter season as we contemplate our own mortality and remember loved ones who have passed from this life, our hearts turn to Him who promised: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

Jesus Christ is the literal Savior of the world, the Son of God, the Prince of Peace, the Holy One of Israel, even the risen Lord, who declared: "Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. … I am the light and the life of the world."

"I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father."

This Easter season, as His witnesses, we testify that He lives and that through Him,we too shall live.

A Night at the Auction

We are so excited about our Service Auction Enrichment Night this coming Thursday! The point of the auction is for us to get to know one another better and grow in love and unity by serving. Sappy? Maybe. But so much fun and completely worth it!

So how will you bid on services if there's no money involved? On the night of the auction you will be given a questionnaire. It will have questions that you can mark off to earn points for the evening's activity. Some of the questions could be if you...

-Had Family Home Evening this week
-20 minutes of daily exercise
-Obeying the speed limit
-Read your scriptures this week
-Fed the missionaries in the past month
-Did something nice for someone

There will be many ways to earn points. These are just a few ideas. Answering the questionnaire and keeping track of your points will be done on the honor system.

We have some great items up for auction. Thank you to all of you who are donating your time and effort to and making this a great success. Some of the items are (but not limited to):

Christmas Cantata Rehearsals

Good evening, ladies! Here's a recap of the enrichment activities going on this week. As a reminder, these activities are designed to meet the needs and desires of the sisters, but sisters are not expected to attend them all.

Monday, 9/14 - Yoga class in the gym at the church. Dress comfortably, and if you do not have a yoga mat plan on wearing sneakers or other shoes that will give you traction on the carpet. Child care will be available at the church for a nominal fee. The cost per week is $2 for the first child, $3 for 2 children to be paid when you come.

Tuesday, 9/15 - Women's Day Out at the Temple. To carpool, meet at the church at 9:15. Cars will be leaving at 9:30 sharp. Or, you can meet at the temple for the 10:20 session. Lunch following at Jason's Deli on 33rd Street between Boulevard and Broadway. You do not have to attend the temple to meet for lunch.

Wednesday 9/16 - Women's Choir at the church in the Relief Society room from 10-11am. We are practicing to meet sing at the quarterly Enrichment Night on September 24th and have just 2 practices left!

Thursday 9/17 - Playgroup, hosted by Stephanie Crandall at Hafer Park from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Meet at the first playground on your right.

Thursday, 9/17 - Frugal And Fabulous. We will be meeting in the Young Women's Room at the church from 7-8pm. Amy Johnson will be presenting with a focus on Frugal Food: grocery shopping, menu planning and budgeting, trimming the excess from our grocery bill, food storage, and more!

We are planning to start a Women's Choir, at least for the summer, possibly a more permanent thing! We would practice weekly (during the day) for an hour, and sing in Sacrament meeting maybe once a month, and for special occasions. We'd like to get started in the next couple of weeks. The most precious commodity in the world is not gold, silver, or oil. It is water. We cannot live more than a few days without it, and it is essential to all life. In John 4:7-14 Christ meets the Samaritan woman at the well and teaches her of "living water".

The scriptures are a reservoir of living water that we can drink from regularly to replenish and sustain our spiritual growth and development. We can obtain living water from the scriptures in 3 ways:

Reading the scriptures from beginning to end.
Studying the scriptures by topic.
Searching for connections, patterns, and themes.

There are only a few rules: This is geared mostly for young families, however older kids and teens are welcome to come, but the little ones take priority! All swimmers must have Mom or Dad with them, there is NO lifeguard. Please, no dropoffs. Obviously, everyone is responsible for their own safety!

At this Easter season of hope and renewal we testify of the glorious reality of the atonement and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The empty tomb brought comforting assurance and provided the answer to the question of Job, “If a man die, shall he live again?” (Job 14:14).

Because of the Savior’s resurrection we will overcome death and become the beneficiaries of His mercy and grace. In a world of trouble and uncertainty, His peace fills our hearts and eases our minds. Jesus is in very deed “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

We give our sure witness that Jesus is the Christ. Though He was crucified, He rose triumphant from the tomb to our everlasting blessing and benefit. To each member of the human family He stands as our Advocate, our Savior, and our Friend.
