September's Visiting Teaching Message

Visiting Teaching Message

The Gospel of Jesus Christ Teaches the Eternal Potential of the Children of God
Ensign, September 2008

Teach the scriptures and quotations that meet the needs of the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you teach to share what they have felt and learned.

What Is My Eternal Potential?

Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "A woman's richest rewards will come as she rises to fulfill her destiny as a devoted daughter of God. To all faithful Saints He has promised thrones, kingdoms, principalities, glory, immortality, and eternal lives. (See Rom. 2:7; D&C 75:5; 128:12, 23; 132:19.) That is the potential for women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is exalting, everlasting, and divine" ("Woman—Of Infinite Worth," Ensign, Nov. 1989, 22).

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: "Oh, that every girl and woman would have a testimony of her potential for eternal motherhood. . . . Female roles did not begin on earth, and they do not end here. A woman who treasures motherhood on earth will treasure motherhood in the world to come, and 'where [her] treasure is, there will [her] heart be also' (Matthew 6:21). By developing a mother heart, each girl and woman prepares for her divine, eternal mission of motherhood" ("A 'Mother Heart,' " Liahona and Ensign, May 2004, 76).

What Can Help Me Reach My Eternal Potential?

Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "God expresses his love for us by providing the guidance we need to progress and reach our potential. . . . He who knows most about us, our potential, and our eternal possibilities has given us divine counsel and commandments in his instruction manuals—the holy scriptures" ("God's Love for His Children," Ensign, May 1988, 59).

President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency: "The purpose of God's creations and of His giving us life is to allow us to have the learning experience necessary for us to come back to Him, to live with Him in eternal life. That is only possible if we have our natures changed through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, true repentance, and making and keeping the covenants He offers all of His Father's children through His Church" ("Education for Real Life," Ensign, Oct. 2002, 16).

President John Taylor (1808–87): "Our main object is eternal lives and exaltations; our main object is to prepare ourselves, our posterity and our progenitors for thrones, principalities and powers in the eternal worlds . . . ; that . . . they and we might be prepared, having fulfilled the measure of our creation on the earth, to associate with the intelligences that exist in the eternal worlds; be admitted again to the presence of our Father, whence we came, and participate in those eternal realities which mankind, without revelation, know nothing about. We are here for that purpose; . . . we are building temples for that purpose; we are receiving endowments for that purpose" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: John Taylor [Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society course of study, 2001], 8–9).

D&C 78:18: "Be of good cheer, for I will lead you along. The kingdom is yours and the blessings thereof are yours, and the riches of eternity are yours."

Run/Walk Group Reminder

Hi Sisters,

Just a reminder -- the Run/Walk group will be meeting tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 8:00 at the duck pond at Hafer Park.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

It's almost the end of the month!

Have you done your Visting Teaching? Here is the VT message for this month.

“Each Sister Is a Beloved Daughter of Heavenly Parents and Has a Divine Destiny,” Ensign, Aug 2008, 69

Teach the scriptures and statements that meet the needs of the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you teach to share what they have felt and learned.

What Does It Mean to Be a Beloved Daughter of Heavenly Parents?

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: “You are literally spirit daughters of Deity, ‘offspring of exalted parents’ with a divine nature and an eternal destiny. You received your first lessons in the world of spirits from your heavenly parents. You have been sent to earth to ‘prove’ yourselves. …

“You are treasured children of the promise. If you will keep the Lord’s statutes and commandments and hearken to His voice, He has promised that He will make you high above the nations in name and honor and praise” (“You Have a Noble Birthright,” Liahona and Ensign, May 2006, 106, 108).

President James E. Faust (1920–2007), Second Counselor in the First Presidency: “A conviction that you are a daughter of God gives you a feeling of comfort in your self-worth. It means that you can find strength in the balm of Christ. It will help you meet the heartaches and challenges with faith and serenity” (“What It Means to Be a Daughter of God,” Liahona, Jan. 2000, 123; Ensign, Nov. 1999, 102).

President Lorenzo Snow (1814–1901): “We believe that we are the offspring of our Father in heaven, and that we possess in our spiritual organizations the same capabilities, powers and faculties that our Father possesses, although in an infantile state, requiring to pass through a certain course or ordeal by which they will be developed and improved according to the heed we give to the principles we have received” (“Discourse,” Deseret News, Jan. 24, 1872, 597).

How Can I Understand and Attain My Divine Destiny?

President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985): “All of you need to drink in deeply the gospel truths about the eternal nature of your individual identity and the uniqueness of your personality. You need, more and more, to feel the perfect love which our Father in Heaven has for you and to sense the value he places upon you as an individual. Ponder upon these great truths, especially in those moments when (in the stillness of such anxiety as you may experience as an individual) you might otherwise wonder and be perplexed” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball [2006], 222).

Romans 8:16–17: “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “We are to be creators in our own right—builders of an individual faith in God, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and faith in His Church. We are to build families and be sealed in holy temples. We are to build the Church and kingdom of God upon the earth. We are to prepare for our own divine destiny—glory, immortality, and eternal lives. These supernal blessings can all be ours, through our faithfulness” (“The Creation,” Liahona, July 2000, 104–5, Ensign, May 2000, 86).

Run/Walk Group @ Hafer Park

Hi Sisters,

Are you ready to run (and walk)? The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a fund raiser to fight breast cancer, is being held Oct. 4th at Bricktown in OKC. If you would like to make this a goal, either to run/walk the 5K or do the 1 mile walk and would like some help training, meet at Hafer Park on August 30, 8:00am for our first training run/walk. Even if you aren't doing the Race for the Cure, come and get a work out -- no pressure, just go at your own pace. See you then!

Playgroup

What would everyone like to do about playgroup? We have thought of many different things but would like to know everyone's opinion. Here are some of the ideas that we had:

1.Combine with 2nd Ward's
2.Have it every week at a different location, i.e. the zoo, playgrounds around town, the Omniplex, etc...
3. Continue to have it once a month

Please give me your opinions! Thank you!

Volleyball

Okay -- we're on for volleyball, so here's what we'll try:

Tuesday, August 26th, 11:00 at the church -- kids welcome but they're you're responsibility
Tuesday, August 26th, 7:00 at the church -- (so you can leave the kids home if you want to)

All skill levels (even no skills!) are welcome. See you then!
